crashed on the floor when I moved in
Dec. 24th, 2020 09:17 pm Surprise: she immediately regrets not packing an overnight bag after sleeping in. Zari spends a chunk of that morning securing clothes and beauty supplies through her phone. She has to hike out to meet the people delivering these in heels again, but it is worth it all the trouble. There is the fact it helps her avoid the intensity of their conversation last night. She needs more time to sit with it. Her need to always look perfect is always expected even if she loosened up for the day. The other is that she is never going to win over Olivia if she is wearing a pair of dirty heels and a wrinkled dress. First impressions are everything. She likes to think it makes a difference when they do arrive. Her mother absolutely does not want to let John in. Zari senses immediately she is waffling on how to proceed with the lady with a pretty dress and designer hiking boots and makes the most of the opportunity. It helps that she is actually telling the truth. She really is here to help Olivia as someone with experience in suddenly inheriting something she wasn't quite prepared to deal with. The mini-tornado she forms in her hand probably helps sell her case too.
It's not a slam dunk by any means. There was never any chance Olivia was going to claim the house and her destiny outright after one conversation. There are little victories though. Zari successfully sets herself as a resource, someone to vent to if nothing else or back her up if she gets into a tight spot, and gives room for John to handle things his way. Neither of them can control what Olivia does next. Zari knows if nothing else Olivia will reach out to her at least if the need arises. Her talent for making people feel like they have a best friend who will encourage and support them without asking a thing in return isn't any less effective on Olivia especially given what happened. The mom is likely just happy she isn't John and doesn't stop her from programming her number into Olivia's phone.
Waiting to see what will happen next isn't easy. Thank God Zari already planned another shopping trip. She is humming chipperly as they get dropped off as their next location: Aldi. She looks way too excited about getting a cart. The novelty of using coins again ends up earning a few looks. Zari goes on loudly about how this is just like when she was a little kid for a solid minute before actually pushing the cart into the store. "It's been actual years since I've been in a grocery store. This is going to be so much fun!"
